With summer in full swing I have compiled a list of my top summer eating tips for diabetics! It’s important for people with diabetes to stay mindful of their diet and make healthy choices. During the summer months many people are busy with vacationing and enjoying summer activities, they may forget to stay hydrated and to watch their carb consumption. This may lead to uncontrolled blood glucose levels and increased risk of developing the complications associated with diabetes.
Here are some tips for people with diabetes to follow this summer:
Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water is important for everyone, but especially for people with diabetes. Dehydration can cause blood sugar levels to rise, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. You can also try drinking sugar-free beverages like unsweetened iced tea or flavored water.
Choose fresh, seasonal produce
Summer is a great time to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables. Choose colorful, low-carb options like berries, melons, cucumbers, and leafy greens. These foods are packed with vitamins and minerals that can help you stay healthy.
Watch your portions
Even healthy foods can cause your blood sugar levels to rise if you eat too much. Be sure to watch your portions and limit your intake of high-carb foods like bread, pasta, and rice.
Don’t skip meals
It’s easy to get caught up in summer activities and forget to eat. But skipping meals can cause your blood sugar levels to drop too low, which can be dangerous. Be sure to eat regular meals and pack healthy snacks like nuts or sliced veggies to take with you on the go.
Consider grilling
Grilling is a great way to cook healthy, diabetes-friendly meals. Try grilling lean proteins like chicken, fish, or tofu, and pair them with grilled vegetables like zucchini and bell peppers.
Limit sugary treats
Ice cream, popsicles, and other sugary treats are popular summer treats, but they can be high in carbs and cause blood sugar spikes. Try making your own healthy treats at home using sugar substitutes like stevia or erythritol.
Remember, managing diabetes is all about balance. With a little planning and attention to your diet, you can enjoy a healthy and happy summer.
